Since 1882 Panjab University (PU) has performed as India's oldest prestigious educational institution by starting in Lahore before moving to Chandigarh in 1947 as its new base. As a public university it occupies 550 acres of land at its campus where students can pursue UG, PG, Diploma and PhD degrees in Arts, Science, Engineering, Law, Commerce, Management, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Medical Sciences. PU receives an A++ rating from NAAC and it operates four leading educational institutions: UIET, UBS, UILS, and UIPS. The university manages three entrance tests including PU-CET, PU-LLB, and PU-MET but considers GATE, JEE, NEET and UGC-NET scores for particular courses. PU maintains outstanding facilities which include the A.C. Joshi Library with 7 lakh books and the 18 student residence facilities and the Olympic-size swimming pool contained in a sports complex and research centers throughout the institution. Various cultural events happen annually at PU including "Jhankaar" as well as inter-university competitions that take place at the university campus. PU has developed numerous renowned alumni from its student body who include former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and astronaut Kalpana Chawla and actress Kirron Kher and activist Gul Panag. Panjab University draws students from throughout India because it possesses an impressive academic standing alongside its active student life community.
